A kindergarten in Gambia to build a better future
We returned to this small West African country, a strip of land where, amid countless logistical and environmental difficulties, we are carrying out a project that has immense value for us. Our goal is to build a kindergarten next to the local school, so that children can access education from their earliest years, finding a safe place away from the dangers of the street.
A daily challenge
Building a kindergarten is not just a matter of will or funds: it is a daily challenge, also against obstacles that in Italy we can hardly even imagine. One of the most surprising concerns the difficulty of finding cement.
In Gambia there is in fact a sort of state monopoly. The government has authorised a single company to produce it and does not allow imports from other countries, not even from neighbouring Senegal, despite lower costs and greater availability. The result is that even a basic material becomes hard to find, expensive and subject to constant interruptions.
And so our daily struggle is not only to secure food, medicines and rights, but also simply to be able to build.
